#YouMightBeAnAutismParentIf When your child watches Fireworks for the 1st time their reaction isn’t what you thought it would be.

Little Man was 3 when he saw Fireworks for the 1st time. We had just moved into our 1st apt that April, just before Little Man Bday. Our new apartment afford us a view of the backside of the park so we would have prime seating for the fireworks on our front porch. That night we prepared our porch and I found the right station and Little Man grabbed the toys he wanted with him for this unknown event. I got out glow sticks and passed them out to kids and Little Man enjoyed breaking and shaking his. We scooped ice cream and were eating it and then the fireworks started. I thought Little Man’s reaction would be “Oooooh! Ahhhhhh! Pretty!” But my expectations were unrealistic in this case. Little Man didn’t flip out but he covered his ears and was watching then he climbed into my lap and was huddled up covering his ears and watching. The poor Little Man he was scared but didn’t want to stop watching. The fireworks were just loud they literally boomed and shook the windows of our apartment! He put up with it very well and his sensitivity has gotten better every year and now we live a few blocks further away so its not as loud when we watch the fireworks from our porch.

  1. We haven’t taken my son to fireworks yet, so I’m not sure what his reaction would be. However, I know exactly what you mean by “scared but didn’t want to stop watching.” I’ve witnessed my son behave the same way, clinging, whimpering, sometimes shaking, but curiosity forcing him to keep looking at whatever scares him. It happened this weekend at a hot air balloon event.
I’m glad to see that your son’s tolerance has increased. I hope you all have a great 4th of July this year!
